The gentle hum of the cellphone, the allure of the screen, the vast digital cosmos: it all beckoned. I found myself caught in the siren song of modern technology, each notification a fleeting affirmation of my place in this new world. And as a baby boomer, this was uncharted territory.

I placed an avatar of me because I aspire to internal joy and happiness, (and yes, I am a morning person.)  I feel that happiness is an inside job!

Transitioning into the digital domain was more than just learning a new technology. It was about interpreting new software updates- again, deciphering a culture in constant flux, and grappling with the dichotomy of my past experiences and this fresh digital frontier.

An epiphany came to me: I had to “wake up” and see the situation for what it was—a reflection of a collective journey, not just my isolated path. I wasn’t alone in this digital rabbit hole. There were many like me, navigating this sea of change, each wave a reminder of our shared human experience.

Yet, amidst this realization, imperfections stared back at me. The occasional misstep in an online conversation, the different language of  the word, “engagement.” The unfamiliarity with some app, or the inadvertent digital faux pas—it was all there, visible in this new realm. But instead of letting these imperfections define me, I decided to leverage tools that could accommodate me. I started looking for my ‘tribe‘ or my support group.  I began to lead myself with self-compassion, turning away from the internal critic that magnified every mistake. Each time the emotional “sting” of overthinking threatened to spiral into drama and trauma, I took a deep breath, reframed my perspective, and grounded myself in the moment.

And that’s when clarity emerged: it wasn’t about the relentless pursuit of fame, the vast web of connections, or the glittering allure of wealth. It was about happiness—my happiness; authentic, genuine, and untethered by external validations. While certain aspects like recognition, connections, and collaborations might come with time, they would be by-products of a journey well-traveled, not the destination itself.

A wise saying resonated: “You don’t kill the goose that lays the golden egg, you nurture the goose.” This digital realm, with all its intricacies, was my goose, and it was my responsibility to nurture it, feed it with authentic interactions, and be consistent in protecting it from the trappings of superficiality.

As I embraced this new chapter, a quote from a famous figure echoed in my mind: “Ducks don’t attend eagle school.” It served as a reminder that while we all have our unique strengths, paths, and perspectives, it’s essential to find the environment that allows us to soar highest.

To all venturing into unfamiliar terrains, remember: It’s not about fitting into a mold or chasing fleeting validations. It’s about discovering where you can fly highest and ensuring that your journey aligns with the song of your heart.
