Breaking Free: The Journey of Letting Go and Embracing the Present

September 21, 20232 min read

Letting go of “the stuff” that doesn’t serve you is a complex yet transformative process that often involves breaking free from old patterns, behaviors, and beliefs. The notion that we might be prisoners to our past or to external circumstances is not new, and it has been addressed by many thinkers, authors, and motivational speakers, such as Jim Rohn and Dr. Joe Dispenza.

Being Accountable
Jim Rohn’s philosophy emphasizes personal responsibility. Blaming external factors like the government, the economy, or other people for your problems may seem like an easy way to justify failures or setbacks, but it prevents you from taking control of your own life. When you’re always looking outside of yourself for the reason you’re not succeeding, you give away your power to make meaningful change.

Breaking Free from the Known Past
Dr. Joe Dispenza talks about being stuck in the “known past” as a way to describe how people can become ensnared by their previous experiences, which then shape their present reality and future possibilities. Your past experiences influence your beliefs, and those beliefs can turn into self-fulfilling prophecies. In a way, you become addicted to the familiarity of your past, even when it’s detrimental to your well-being.

The Process of Letting Go
Identify What Doesn’t Serve You: The first step in letting go is identifying what exactly is holding you back. Is it a belief, a past experience, or perhaps even a relationship?

Accept Responsibility: This doesn’t mean blaming yourself; it means acknowledging your role in your own life and understanding that you have the power to change it.

Challenge Your Beliefs: Investigate the beliefs that are holding you back. Are they based on facts, or are they just assumptions you’ve made based on past experiences?

Seek Help: Sometimes, breaking free from old patterns requires external help, whether it’s from a mentor, a therapist, or supportive friends and family.

Take Small Steps: Change doesn’t have to happen all at once. Start with small, manageable changes and work your way up.

Be Present: Mindfulness and meditation can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, making it easier to identify what doesn’t serve you and to be present in your life.

Be Compassionate: Be kind to yourself during this process. Letting go is hard, and it’s okay to acknowledge that.

Reevaluate and Adjust: Periodically review your progress. Are you moving closer to your goals? If not, what can you do differently?

By letting go of what doesn’t serve you, you make room for new experiences, relationships, and opportunities that align more closely with who you are and who you want to become. It’s a challenging process, but the rewards can be life-changing.
